Lake City Community School
Lake City Community School (LCCS) is the only school in the Hinsdale County School District and serves approximately 75 students from preschool through 12th grade in the Lake City area. Located in the heart of Lake City’s National Historic District, the school operates on a four-day school week, with classes held Tuesday through Friday. Small, multi-level class sizes and strong parental and community support create an environment where students thrive.
LCCS is fully accredited by the State of Colorado and consistently ranks among the top public schools in the state, as recognized by the Colorado Department of Education. The school has earned prestigious honors such as the Colorado John Irwin Schools of Excellence Awards and “Accredited with Distinction” status. It is celebrated for high academic achievement, consistent growth on state exams, and post-secondary readiness, including exceptional performance on the Colorado SAT, as well as maintaining low dropout and high graduation rates.
The school is staffed by a team of experienced educators dedicated to individualized and experiential learning. Elementary students are grouped into four classrooms led by teachers for preschool, K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 grades. Secondary students are taught by subject-specific teachers specializing in language arts, math, science, and social studies. These educators also lead elective classes such as drama, health, journalism, personal finance, AP cybersecurity, AP computer science. Special education staff work with students across all grade levels to ensure every child receives the support they need.
Part-time staff enhance the curriculum by teaching health/physical education, art, music, Spanish, and STEM programs, as well as serving as instructional assistants. The school collaborates closely with the Lake City Public Library, supported by a shared librarian who serves both institutions.
LCCS places a strong emphasis on educating the whole child through hands-on, experiential learning. Its individualized educational process includes bi-annual conferences where teachers, parents, and students set goals and assess progress. This approach ensures that acceleration and pacing are tailored to meet each student's unique needs.
The school’s low student-to-teacher ratio of 5:1 fosters a personalized and nurturing educational environment. With broad community support for its students, teachers, and administration, LCCS continues to uphold its mission of excellence in education.
