Lake City Community School
Lake City Community School, the only school in Hinsdale County School District, serves approximately 100 students living in the Lake City area in pre-school through 12th grade classes. The school calendar is based on a 4-day school week with classes meeting Tuesday through Friday. Class sizes are small and frequently multi-level. The school, fully accredited by the State of Colorado, benefits from great parental and community support and involvement.
In the elementary school, four teachers (preschool, K-1, 2-3 and 4-5) staff the four elementary classrooms. Secondary school students are taught by four teachers (language arts, math, science and social studies) in subject dedicated classrooms. Secondary teachers also conduct elective classes including drama, health, journalism and life skills. Special education staff work with all grades.
Additional part-time staff members teach health/physical education, art, music, Spanish, technology and work as instructional assistants. The school coordinates services with the Lake City Public Library through a librarian who works at both libraries.
The instructional staff is experienced and dynamic, focusing on the whole child through hands on, experiential education. An individualized educational process brings together teachers, parents and students in bi-annual conferences to set goals and assess growth with acceleration and pacing to meet individual needs.
The Lake City Community School houses the Edna Knowlton Ramsey Elementary School, and H. G. Heath Middle and High School in a single building located in the heart of the Lake City, Colorado National Historic District. The heart of the school is our multi-purpose room. There are three elementary school classrooms, five middle/high school classrooms, a library, an art studio, and a science lab. Occupying several lots between Gunnison Avenue (Highway 149) and Silver Street, the single-story structure has a distinctive green roof and cupola. It is surrounded by a tree-lined, grassy yard and features a wonderful playground and sports courts.
