Hinsdale County School District was informed in April that Illuminate Education experienced a data breach in databases that house student data for the School District. With the support of external forensic specialists, Illuminate Education determined that certain of its databases were subject to unauthorized access between December 28, 2021, and January 8, 2022. According to Illuminate Education, the affected databases contained student names, academic and behavior information, enrollment information, accommodation information, special education information, and student demographic information. The School District does not provide Social Security numbers or financial information to outside vendors, therefore such data is not at risk of a breach. Illuminate Education has found no evidence that any information was subject to actual or attempted misuse.
Illuminate Education is cooperating with the District to notify and support families who have been impacted by this data breach. Families who were impacted by this incident will be receiving a letter with additional information from Illuminate Education, including complimentary offers for access to 12 months of identity monitoring services through IDX. If you do not receive a letter from Illuminate Education by June 30, 2022, please feel free to contact the school to determine if your student’s information was impacted. If you have concerns or would like additional information, you may contact Illuminate directly at 833-940-2288 or you may contact Carla Whinnery at [email protected].
At Hinsdale County School District, we take matters related to student data privacy very seriously and continue to comply with applicable law and best practices for data security. We will continue to update the school community and impacted families if there are any changes in this situation.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Hall
